3 Secrets to Success

Steamboat Springs, Colorado is the home of more Olympians than any other ski resort in United States. In 2006, Steamboat sent more athletes to compete in the Olympic Games than some small countries.

Todd Lodwick, Nordic combined;
Johnny Spillane, Nordic combined;
Ryan St. Onge, aerial;
Tommy Schwall, ski jumper.

The 2010 games are only three weeks away. Once again Steamboat has major competitors on the team.

Todd Lodwick, Nordic combined;
Johnny Spillane, Nordic combined;
Rebecca Sorensen, Skeleton.

Ryan St. Onge will also compete in aerials; however, this time he lists Winter Park as home.

Becoming an Olympic athlete requires hours and hours of focused practice. Many of these athletes have trained seriously since they were little tots. Jeremy Abbott, Aspen figure skater, started skating when he was two; he competed starting at age four.

When the other kids were out playing hop scotch and Red Rover, these aspiring hopefuls were practicing their skills. Success requires focused practice and constant improvement.

A violin virtuoso was greeted backstage after performing a magnificent concert. The fan said, “I would give my life to play like that.” The master replied, “Madam, I did.”

Whether you are competing in the Olympic Games, practicing to be a masterful musician or conducting your own business, you must have passion, persistence and consistency. Every successful endeavor requires long term dedication.

Passion for your pursuit is essential, not optional. Without a passion for your career, it becomes nothing more than a pleasant hobby. Treat your activity like a casual hobby and it will pay you in proportion to your effort. Entitlement attitudes rarely, if ever, achieve success. Decide what you are willing to forfeit in order to attain your goals.

Skiing all day in deep powder is a heavenly experience. If your income and future relate to skiing, fabulous; enjoy your day and perfect your technique. If your goal is to be a famous heart surgeon, skiing is a distraction. Anything which takes you away from your goals constitutes a distraction. Everyone has choices. Choose to play now and you will not achieve retirement income for later.

A coaching client recently complained that his business was failing. As he continued to speak, the reason became obvious. Working for six months at the business and taking off six months to swim and scuba was a recipe for disaster. Another coaching client declined a wonderful two month European tour in order to focus on his business.

Choose to remain extra focused right now in order to be able relax later.

1. Determine a goal and a career focus which truly ignites your passion. Lukewarm goals and desires NEVER propel you past the inevitable rough spots in your success path.
2. Remain consistent and persistent in your pursuit of the coveted goal. Constantly learn and apply the knowledge acquired. Read books of other people who have succeeded at your chosen career. Attend live events and network with other successful people in your chosen field. Practice over and over again until the skill becomes ingrained into your subconscious. Visualize yourself performing and achieving your goals. Constantly examine your performance and make the appropriate adjustments to improve. Choose your time priorities carefully.

3. Dedicate your time, effort and resources to constantly improving the skills you already possess and acquiring the new skills to make yourself even better.

Success only involves luck when you consider that good luck is when opportunity meets preparation. Olympic athletes and musical masters practice several hours per day for years for their few moments on stage in the spotlight. Successful business owners follow exactly the same pattern of behavior. Talent helps but talent alone will not take you to the podium time after time. Financial resources may speed the learning curve by placing you with the best coaches, teachers and educational materials.

You are responsible for the application of your talent, resources and effort. The final determination of success always rests at the feet of the person with passion, consistency, persistence and focused unswerving dedication.

Savor the Taste of Success

Every disciplined effort yields multiple results.

When you are knee deep in the swamp with alligators nipping at you from all directions, it is difficult to remember that your purpose was to drain the swamp.

Each disciplined effort provides a snowball effect. Each one builds on the next until the desired outcome materializes. In the meantime, reach back into your memory banks and recall one or more of your most treasured success feelings. Feeling is the operative word. People respond to feelings more than logic. Recapture that feeling of exhilaration when you achieved a major goal. Internalize that feeling so well that you can recall it at a moment’s notice. Knowing how to celebrate your success and potential helps with the times when things are not going as well as you desire.

Everyone has down times emotionally and financially. Allowing yourself to wallow in self pity never creates a positive outcome. Reach back into prior success and recapture that positive feeling.

Create new software for your self talk and the language you use to others. Broke sales people reek of the scent of failure. Your thoughts, feelings and attitudes reflect in your words and vibrations. It is imperative that you internalize feelings of success.

Positive self talk always focuses on “I can,” “I am,” “I am in the process of,” “I earn,” I will,” and “I have achieved and I will again.” Set your goals and focus on each one as already accomplished. Attach the feeling of success to each goal. Visualize the goals as already accomplished and savor the feeling you will have with that accomplishment. Feel the success and experience it with all five senses. Put a picture of the success as if it is already achieved front and center. Keep your focus on the goal and wading through the temporary swamp will feel so much easier.

Success is ten percent inspiration and ninety percent perspiration. As Jim Rohn, noted business philosopher, was told when he was 25, “lack of money is not the problem. Lack of an idea to create money is the problem.” Focus on your natural creativity and discover that idea. If you already have the idea, then focus on the positive achievement.

The bigger the idea, the longer you will need to develop it, shape it and bring it to fruition. Little ideas only need a helicopter pad; here it comes and there it goes. Test your ideas on paper until you are clear, and then test it on other like-minded, progressive thinkers. They may offer tweaks which will speed your progress.

Never give up on yourself and a well thought out idea. Keep shaping and molding the thought until it yields positive results. Hold on to the positive feelings of success every step of the journey. Believe in yourself and your dream.

Why invest the time and effort in yourself and your dream?

You strengthen your character
You stay focused on results
You make better decisions
You build self confidence
You heighten your awareness
You create excitement
You enjoy and achieve your potential

Write five compelling reasons why you will never give up on yourself and your dreams. If your “why” is not big enough, your “what” will not matter.

Remez Sasson said, “People with a positive frame of mind think about possibilities, growth, expansion and success. They expect happiness, health, love and good relationships.”

Savor the feeling of success. Be able to internalize that ecstasy at a moment’s notice. Attitude is not just a state of mind; it is a reflection of what you value. You will succeed. Remain consistent, persistent and focused on your future.

Winning Choices

The economy is really getting people down right now. Even worse, it is income tax time. How many of your really enjoy the IRS and tax time? Unless you are a CPA, probably not. How would you like a fun suggestion?

Find the humor in situations. Restore the creativity and levity to life. Make a specific decision to enjoy life. Choose to have a positive attitude and an enjoyable life.

The operative words for success are “Winning Choices” rather than taxes, government policies, jobs or taxes. It’s not the economy; it’s our choices in dealing with the situations of life. Make no mistake, by choosing to take action or sit back and wait for others to make the choices for us; we are creating our personal economy. Choose or by default some one else chooses for you.

There are so many choices out there. The internet has been a blessing and a curse. The World Wide Web has brought you a tangled web of choices; so many that you may not know where to turn. The people who thrive especially in a bad economy are the people who make winning choices and follow them through. Failures will procrastinate.

I thought about talking about procrastination earlier but decided to put it off until now.

Success belongs to those who take action. Would a baby ever learn to walk by laying there and saying “you do it for me.” Would you have learned how to swim, ride a bike or catch a ball by sitting on the sideline?

Wining choices. How can you tell if it is a winning choice or a losing choice until you make a choice and take action? Mistakes are a part of life.

Tom Watson, American golfer, said, “If you want to increase your success rate, double your rate of failure.”

“Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved,” by William Jennings Bryan, American politician and orator.

Now about that fun approach to paying taxes which was mentioned earlier . . .

Want a fun way to pay your taxes? Life revolves around creativity.

Dear Internal Revenue Service:

• Enclosed you will find my 2005 tax return showing that I owe $3,407.00 in taxes. Please note the attached article from the USA Today newspaper, dated 12 November, wherein you will see the Pentagon (Department of Defense) is paying $171.50 per hammer and NASA has paid $600.00 per toilet seat.

• I am enclosing four (4) toilet seats (valued at $2,400) and six (6) hammers valued at $1,029), which I secured at Home Depot, bringing my total remittance to $3,429.00. Please apply the overpayment of $22.00 to the “Presidential Election fund,” as noted on my return. You can do this inexpensively by sending them one (1) 1.5” Phillips Head screw (see aforementioned article from USA Today newspaper detailing how H.U. D. pays $22.00 each for 1.5” Phillips Head screws). One screw is enclosed for your convenience.

• It has been a pleasure to pay my tax bill this year, and I look forward to paying it again next year.

Sincerely,

A Satisfied Taxpayer

(Author unknown)

This approach is not necessarily recommended for you to do, but it does present a fun thought. . . It’s not the economy which is getting us down and keeping us down. It’s not our even our taxes or our income, it’s our choices.

Determine what it is that makes you blood boil with passion. What is so important to you that you are willing to stand up to your mother-in-law and declare it? Well, maybe that’s unrealistic, but be willing to use it as an example for your kids. Do you want to leave it as part of your legacy.

Success is a matter of firm decision. It is a matter of commitment. It is a matter of being willing to stake your actions and your resources, not just your words. Your level of commitment determines your results.
Cortez was a very wealthy man in Spain. He heard about a fabulous treasure deep in the heart of Mexico which had been held by the same army for over 600 years. He sold everything he had and borrowed more from the Spanish government in 1519 to buy 11 ships, 600 men and 20 horses. Everyone is all excited to go get the treasure until they get out to sea on the way to Cuba and some begin to whine. “I didn’t know it would be so far.” “I didn’t know I would have to work for it.”

Cortez knew that with the right help, he could take the treasure so he drilled the men on the beach for weeks after they landed in Mexico. The morning of the battle he called them together for a final pep talk. You remember pep rallies in high school. . . Cortez stood on a platform and the men expected him to say, “We’re going in to battle and if we win, we’ll meet back here on the beach for a party. We’ll bring in cake and punch and music from a local catering company. If it gets too tough we’ll meet back here and go to the boats to talk over our next approach.” Instead he leaned in and said “Burn the boats.” They said, “Excuse me.” Cortez said, “Burn the boats. If we are going home, we are going in their boats.”
An amazing thing happened. The men fought really well and took the treasure. Cortez raised their level of commitment.

If you expect to thrive in a tough economy, you must be ready to burn the boats. You must be ready to keep running until the kite flies. Swing for the fence and keep swinging.

Step one in any situation includes comprehensive analysis of the problem. Solving a problem without clearly identifying the problem and the causes constitutes an exercise in futility.

Employment uncertainty? With major companies closing their doors, downsizing or sending jobs overseas, many people suffer from the fear of job loss. Even though those fears may have justification, the very act of indulging in fear intensifies the issue. The subconscious mind accepts and works to manifest whatever you think about; bringing your thoughts into reality is the job of the subconscious mind. Knowing that you create your own reality means that you also have the power to change and improve your reality. Fearing a job loss and dwelling on that fear only increases the probability of unintentionally creating that very occurrence. The problem is therefore intensified by your very fearful thoughts. Job loss becomes a result of your thoughts. The problem is really not a job loss but your very thoughts of fear of a job loss.

Problem = Fear of a job loss rather than an actual job loss. If you create the thought in the first place, you have the power to change the thought to a more positive and constructive thought.

Fear represents a destructive use of our creative abilities. Winners, successful people, experience fear but they never allow it to stop them. Concentrating on fear means focusing on the negative rather than the positive. Winners acknowledge various outcomes exist and then go to work with a laser focus on creating the positive result they desire.

Be willing to be creative: creative with your business, creative with your finances, creative with your life.

Wouldn’t it be nice if whenever we messed up our life we could press “Ctrl Alt Delete” and start all over?

We know our economy is a mess right now and everyone points the finger at someone else as the responsible party.

How come we choose from 2 people for President and 50 for Miss America?

Instant Results

I am currently listening to Rory Vaden's "Take the Stairs" presentation. Rory echoes the American tendency to take the easy way. When confronted with a choice between walking up the stairs or riding the no effort escalator, which one do you choose? Most Americans look for the easy way and ride the no effort escalator.

This "give me the path of least effort" mentality escalated the weight control industry and the fast food industry through the predominance of expanding waist lines. In our fast paced society instant coffee is a big deal, microwaveable prepackaged food is a big deal, but long term lifestyle changes emphasizing physical fitness are not a big deal.

In the Steamboat Health and Recreation facility we laughed that only 6 weeks per year were really busy: the 2 weeks before ski season, the 2 weeks before bikini season and the 2 weeks after New Years Resolutions. I have even heard, "I'm going to work out hard for a couple of weeks to get in shape and then I don't have to worry about it again." How foolish. Physical fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle means continual focused exercise. When do you get to stop? You don't. The only way to maintain health and physical fitness involves consistent, persistent and targeted exercise. Instant success does not exist.

A healthy lifestyle is exactly that, a lifestyle, not a one time event. Why even think that 20 or 30 years of incorrect eating habits, lack of exercise and lazy living could be erased in a few days or weeks? Would you tell your kids not to go to class or do their homework all semester; tell the kids to cram for the test a day or two before test date? Of course not.

Easy short cuts, get rich quick and escalator mentality handicap success. A plethora of "get rich quick" schemes exist on the internet today. Wikipedia describes easy money and get rich quick as "A get-rich-quick scheme is a plan to acquire high rates of return for a small investment. Most such schemes promise that participants can obtain this high rate of return with little risk....
It is clearly possible to get rich quickly if one is prepared to accept very high levels of risk - this is the premise of the gambling industry. However, gambling offers the near-certainty of completely losing the original stake over the long term, even if it offers regular wins along the way. Economic theory states that risk-free opportunities for profit are not stable, because they will quickly be exploited by arbitrageurs."

Note the premise of get rich quick claims low risk while actually containing extremely high risk. Every wealthy businessman has studied, practiced and perfected his craft in the process of creating wealth. Wealth creation requires a "take the stairs" mentality. Instant wealth, just like instant physical fitness or instant success is not reality. Study every "overnight" success and you will discover years of study, practice and work leading up to that magic moment.

Network marketing instant success stories usually reveal 6 to 12 years of trial and error before settling into the ideal company and system. As a college professor of mine said, "you can have 10 years experience or one year's experience 10 times." Learn from each of your experiences. Continue to grow as a person and a business professional. Adopt the disciplined "take the stairs not the escalator" mentality. Get rich quick and easy short cuts do not produce success; dedicated, focused, persistent efforts produce success.

Instant results work for coffee, mashed potatoes or even oatmeal but not business success. Commit to dedicated, persistent forward motion activities; you will achieve success. Develop the discipline of taking the stairs, not the escalator mentality.

Success Strategy

“Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.”
Sir Winston Churchill

Reading through numerous success quotes reveals a predominant theme. No one achieves success instantaneously. Success arrives through the process of failing over and over, getting back up each time and persisting. The magic secret of all successful people is continuing to strive until the goal is achieved. Time after time we meet obstacles. Those obstacles are only insurmountable if you perceive them as such. Persistent and consistent action on a well designed course of action results in success.

Note the clue of “well designed course of action.” A major part of success is showing up over and over again with the right attitude and a determination which will not be denied.

First define exactly what you desire to achieve. Being very specific about your destination creates the beginning of a success track. Know exactly what success “looks like” for you. Define success in every specific detail: the amount of money, the achievement of a very specific award, an exact number on the scales, comfortably wearing a specific size or a specific garment. Knowing precisely what goal constitutes success to you, is the only way you can quantitatively measure achieving it.

For an athlete, it may be competing in the Olympic Games and winning the gold medal in a specific event. For someone who is dieting and exercising, it may be comfortably zipping and buttoning that favorite pair of test jeans. For someone else it may be earning ten thousand dollars a month or even one hundred thousand dollars a month. Different people have different measures of success.

Bob Dylan, rock star, says, “A person is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.” Being able to do what you choose to do rather than what you feel you are required to do certainly feels successful. Living life on your terms rather than on someone else’s terms implies a degree of success and freedom. Any time someone else controls your time and duties, you are never totally free.

Success embodies freedom to most people. Entrepreneurialism conveys a degree of freedom to me. It allows me to establish my own duties, my own hours and my own potential lifestyle. Freedom represents an integral part of success to me. Freedom also represents a moving success target. Freedom changes as my success goals evolve. Success changes over the years. What constituted success in my 20s was an entirely different set of criteria than success in my 60s. Success becomes an evolving goal as it should. Ideally, you keep achieving your success target and raising the bar for yourself.

I love Monty Hall’s success quote, “Actually, I’m an overnight success. But it took twenty years.” Set your ideal achievement, what true success looks like to you. Next create a specific plan to achieve that success goal.

If you are an entrepreneur, it will consist of a certain number of customers, a certain amount of earnings or even better, a specific net profit per month. Designing your plan will include knowing which marketing method you prefer. Know how you plan to utilize the marketing method in order to generate the ideal number of customers. What do you need to learn and do in order to implement that marketing successfully?

It will also specify the number of leads or customers you require to generate a specific number of sales. Determine the cost per customer to generate those sales. Calculate the profit per sale and the number of sales required to meet the goal. Specify the time frame in which to accomplish each task.

Take Action.

Know every detail of what you consider your success goal. Design the specific plan to achieve it. Put the plan into action. Give yourself regular checkpoints to determine if you are on schedule. Readjust as necessary. Be persistent and consistent. Success absolutely results with this formula.

Internal Controls

What really shapes your life? Who holds the controls for your future? You do. Your internal controls, your programming control your future.

Ability constitutes a significant portion, but ability alone will not carry you to success. History abounds with highly intelligent people who have wasted their lives. Intelligence and talent assist one in achieving success; however, those qualities alone are not sufficient.

Opportunity contributes another major piece to the success puzzle. Being in the right place at the right time certainly should not be overlooked. You must make yourself and your talents known. You must be available to participate when opportunity knocks.

Knowledge forms another portion of the success equation. Highly educated individuals have been known to work very menial jobs. Education and specific training enhance the probability of success but those qualities alone do not insure success.

Ability, opportunity, and knowledge contribute toward success. None of those three outshine “passion” as the key ingredient for achievement.

When John C. Maxwell was a new pastor, he was sent to a “wide spot in the road” size town. The first Sunday there were 3 people and 2 of them were John and his wife Margaret. He loved people, worked hard and built the congregation to about 100. As a 23 year old pastor, he was quite proud of his accomplishment. One Sunday in the summer he decided to stretch the congregation to the unfathomable goal of 300 for the first Sunday in October. Some of the folks in that small valley had never seen 300 people but they agreed to help. They each asked everyone in the valley several times; there were not that many people in the valley so each one received several invitations.

The first Sunday in October arrived and people swarmed to the tiny church. The windows were open and people were inside, outside and everywhere. The head usher stood and announced that there were 299 people. Pastor John said, “Our goal is 300.” He found himself declaring that he would not speak until he found the 300th person to complete the goal. Betty stood up to lead a couple of songs while he located the 300th person.

John was so pumped and excited and the congregation patted him on the back as he marched down the isle and out to find the 300th person. His excitement was extreme until he stood outside and thought, “Now what do I do?” He walked across the street to the only service station in town. There he found the owner and the mechanic. His question to them was, “Which one of you wants to be a hero to the entire valley by becoming the 300th person and fulfilling our goal.”

Note the question, “Which one of you wants to be a hero to the entire valley?” Long story short, they hung a closed sign on the service station and both men went across the street to the church. The congregation cheered, the service station owner and mechanic beamed as the entire congregation treated them as heroes.

At the end of the day, the only element which made that day a resounding success instead of just a great day was passion. Ability did not accomplish the goal. Opportunity did not create success. Knowledge did not figure in the result. Passion led the charge and passion accomplished the goal.

Neither ability, nor opportunity, nor knowledge created success. Passion accomplished the goal. What passion do you possess which can and will lead you to your goals?

Set Point

Set Point

In tennis, the final point which allows one player or team to win the set. A set is typically when one player or team wins at least 6 games and wins two more games than their opponents.

Any one who has ever dieted also knows that their weight seems to have a metabolic set point. This is the mark on the scale which your body seems to return to time after time. Unless a significant change in behavior and eating pattern occurs, the weight always returns to the same number of pounds. Note the key difference becomes making a significant change in the type of foods consumed, quantity of food consumed and the behavior. Going on a diet and returning to the same behavior and eating pattern as before the diet is pointless. A significant behavior change must occur to keep the weight at the lower level.

Your finances also have a set point. The reason most lottery winners return to the same level of poverty as before they won the lottery, is that their money management behavior did not change. Statistics show that lottery winners go from broke to wealth and back to broke within three years. Why did they lose all of those windfall earnings? The spending patterns and money management behavior remained the same; there was simply more money to spend for a few years. A significant behavior change must result in order for the end result to be different. Financial education consists of managing money with a fresh new mindset. In order to elevate your financial set point, there must be changes.

Change the amount of money you mentally deserve. Surprised? Amazing how many people have deservability issues with money. Some of those issues stem from our childhood and the discussions within our family of origin. If we heard statements such as “filthy rich” or “money does not grow on trees,” those statements unconsciously set a negative image of money in our programming. One of the statements which causes me to cringe is “I may be poor but I’m a good person.” Once again, the implication pervades that being a good person and being wealthy are opposites. Determine your internal beliefs about money. Chances are that some of your original programming needs a revamp.

Unless you readjust your mental and emotional financial thermostat, you have tied both hands behind your back and placed a gag in your mouth in terms of speaking and receiving wealth. You have also placed a lead weight on the water level of your bank balance. You have predetermined yourself to sink into debt rather than float along in affluence.

Many home business entrepreneurs discover this economic dilemma. Home business opportunities are frequently highly lucrative. A large income can be earned with extremely low overhead. If you are struggling with your home based business, it may be that your financial thermostat is set so low that you are unintentionally blocking success and income. In other cases, home based business entrepreneurs experience tremendous success and then plunge backward because they have not reset their financial thermostat to believe they deserve wealth and success.

Financial set points affect many areas of life. People have been known to deny themselves dream vacations, new homes, new cars and various other material possessions because they did not feel that they deserved such rewards.

Examine your early programming about money and success. Look deeply into your feelings and deservability surrounding money and success. You will probably discover that you have unintentionally been blocking your own path to wealth and freedom.

For more specific ideas on raising your financial set point, contact Elaine at www.Elaine4Success.com. Let me help you make forward progress toward the success and financial freedom you deserve. Let me help you raise your financial thermostat.

Chasing Success

Ever watch a dog running in circles chasing his tail? Now I grant that most dogs do not have corporate level responsibilities, so it probably isn’t important how productively they spend their time.

An old story depicted an alley cat watching a dog racing madly in a circle chasing his tail. Finally the cat, you know the curiosity of cats, could no longer stand watching the dizzy dog. Alley cat, “Why are you running in circles chasing your tail?” Dizzy dog,”One of my friends explained to me that my happiness and success are all in my tail. If I can catch it and hold on, then I will have a firm hold on my success and happiness for the future.” “Hmmm,” stated the alley cat. “What I have discovered is that my happiness is indeed in my tail also. If I go about my business taking care of myself and my responsibilities, my tail follows me. When I am responsible I do not have to chase success and happiness, they always follow me.”

How many people follow the dog’s mindset and chase after success? Amazing how unproductive it becomes to chase after something. I fully agree that following your passion and working diligently toward your goals generally results in achieving more goals. Chasing after something has an air of desperation and need. Taking responsibility and methodically working each step on the path to success, encourages success to be attracted to you.

Attraction marketing and attraction leadership are widely acclaimed in the media. Using the attractor factor instead of the chasing mentality removes the desperation and stress. Any one who would enjoy a little less stress in their life? The medical industry receives a major portion of its income treating stress related issues. It is my opinion that the majority of the obesity problems have their origin in stress. We are creating our own stress. Why are we doing this to ourselves?

Our hurry scurry life of “I want it right now” has created an anxiety society. We have instant food from the microwave and fast food restaurants. We have ATM machines so we no longer have to wait in bank lines. We can even drive through Starbucks for our caffeine.

Success eludes us sometimes because we chase it with a desperate pursuit rather than creating value so that success becomes attracted to us. Success and happiness are attracted to the peaceful heart.

Think about the people you know and with whom you enjoy spending your time. Are you attracted to the tense and over stressed individuals or the people with whom you speak on a variety of subjects? Are you attracted to those with whom you enjoy activities and have fun? Think about the most successful people in you life. They are focused on their careers during working hours and totally present with their loved ones at other times.

Chasing success with the fury and intensity of a dog chasing his tail, results in circles more than forward progress. The alley cat wisdom of taking care of responsibility and allowing success and happiness to follow you results in a more productive life.

Re-examining your approach to life and success may result in more productivity, more success and more happiness. Having less stress becomes a bonus.

Success is Failing Forward

In John C. Maxwell’s book “Failing Forward” he dispels the myth that failure is a bad thing. The man who has never made a mistake is taking orders from the one who made several mistakes. Sometimes what appears to be a failure at the moment is simply success trying to be born in a bigger and better way. When I have failed, and yes I have many failures, it generally meant that I was not thinking big enough. I simply needed to tweak my thinking and action.

There is the story of a man who made a fortune in oil by going back to wells others had abandoned and drilling just a little deeper. There is the story of a man who stopped just three feet short of one of the biggest gold mines ever discovered. Edison, one of the world’s greatest inventors, successfully identified 10,000 ways that the electric light bulb would NOT work before he discovered the one that did work.

Major league baseball players expect to be out every two out of three or three out of four times at bat. Pro football quarterbacks know that some passes will be dropped or intercepted or even caught out of bounds, but they don’t stop throwing. The pass that results in a first down or a touchdown makes up for the ones that were not successful.

In my own home based business I have reinvented my strategy many times. Not every Google campaign worked. Not every web page design attracted leads. Not every print ad resulted in sales. Did I stop marketing and give up? Absolutely not. When my pay per click campaigns with Google were costing more than the sales they were generating, did I say Google does not work? Of course not. I decided to change my landing page, change my ad or change my keywords. Sometimes I changed all three. The secret there is to only change one at a time. Otherwise you will not know which change made the profitable difference.

When Google changed their rules, and they do change their rules ever four to six weeks, I added article writing to my marketing arsenal.

I am a hiker. Sometimes when I am making a long climb and my legs are complaining, do I turn around and quit? No because I know I am closer to the top than I think. We have a winding road in Steamboat which we lovingly call the “run of the false summit.” Every time we come around a corner, we think this must be the top. Unfortunately, there is another switchback and then another before the top. It is not a point to stop, but a reminder to keep pushing forward just a little longer.

Remember, whether you are an inventor, a major league ball player, a hiker, a runner, or a marketer, one monumental success makes up for several temporary setbacks. The key is always to learn from your failures. When you use mistakes or failures as learning and growing experience rather than a defeat, you actually progress forward.

Notice I said learn from each temporary setback. When you view them as learning experiences on your way to small successes, and even greater success, the temporary defeat does not faze you. Or at least not for long. When you view every experience as a learning experience, it becomes a college classroom on life. When you view a failure as a failure, it becomes a failure.

Sports, business and even our personal life presents us with challenges. Some of those challenges become victories and some become learning experiences. It all depends on your attitude and how you view your present and your future.

My college professor told me something I have never forgotten. Even though that was 40 years ago, the message is still valid today. “You can have ten years experience or one year’s experience ten times.” Use every situation as a learning experience and you will have ten years experience.

The attitude of a winner, the attitude of a professional, is to continually learn and grow. Developing a learning mindset rather than a failure mindset will propel you through life in an upward spiral toward success. Any other choice but learning and growing and you will defeat yourself. Do an attitude check on yourself right now. Are you failing forward toward success?

Come visit me at Elaine4Success.com and together we will propel you toward success.

Positive Mindset

Success leaves clues and those clues are frequently related to the mindset of the achiever.

“But I want it!” declares the persistent child. The best salesman in the world can not persist longer than an adamant child. Every persuasion tactic in the books and several new ones developed out of necessity on the spur of the moment will be deployed by a determined child. Small children will develop more creativity and more adaptability to any situation. When one approach seems blocked, they employ the ant theory and go around, over, under or through the obstacle.

When Fido wants to play “throw the ball or throw the stick” he will drop the wet gooey object at your feet and stand there eagerly wagging his tail and jumping around until you give in and throw the object. Fido, or at least my son’s Labrador puppy, will persist until his tongue is hanging out and he just can’t run another step without falling over in a heap of exhaustion.

Why can’t people be more like small children, puppies and ants? You say it is their youth and high energy? Perhaps that is a factor but my belief rests more with the persistence and determination. Before society conditions the innocent child to expect rejection and failure, a child believes they are indestructible and that everything is possible. Maybe the time has arrived to rediscover your inner child.

Everything remains possible for the person who is laser focused on exactly what they want. Truly believe you not only can achieve that goal but you absolutely WILL achieve the goal. Employ the determined child attitude of “I will not be denied.” Employ the persistent puppy philosophy of “This is Fun. I want to Play.” Apply the ant demeanor of hurrying forward and going over, under or around every obstacle. Put yourself in the mindset of being excited about your goal and absolutely knowing with every fiber of you being that the goal is already yours. It is already accomplished. See it happily finished in your mind. Smile and enjoy the feeling. Celebrate. Hold that joyous feeling.

Apply that laser focus on learning everything possible about your target goal. Read books, go to live seminars, ask others who have succeeded and network with positive minded and goal oriented people. Study personal development as well as every aspect of your potential business. Jim Rohn, noted business philosopher, says to “work harder on yourself than you do on your business.” Focus your mind on believing you have achieved and will continue to achieve. Persist in developing a plan to go from exactly where you are to exactly where you choose to go. Set time frames for every milestone in the success path. Record everything in your journal. Do not use your head for a filing cabinet. Read, study and persist on that plan.

Once you learn everything you possibly can learn, TAKE ACTION. Nothing changes until you take action. All of the thoughts in the world are non-productive until you put them into action.

Everything starts with your thoughts, your beliefs and your feelings. Passion is the key. The small child passionately demands. The puppy persists unendingly. The ant either finds a way or dies trying. Revive the passion and persistence. Bring back your inner child. Everything is possible for the laser focused and determined individual. It all starts in your head. Unless your head and heart are in the game, YOU are not in the game.

Tips for Success

Dogs don’t bark at parked cars. Even an animal in the forest will stand perfectly still in order to avoid being noticed.

You can have the most beautiful web site every created with fabulous pictures, graphics and compelling text, but until you take action to attract attention to it, it is worthless. The time tested success training tip is to take massive action. The scientific laws decree that nothing happens until something moves. This rule applies even more in business today.

If you say September has always been my slowest month because people are just returning from vacation and getting ready to get the kids back in school, you may not prospect as much. You may make fewer calls. The results probably demonstrated that September was indeed a slow month. You decreed from September 1 that the month would be slow and you took less action; consequently, the month was indeed slow. The problem existed not with the month of September, but your attitude about it and your actions (or lack of action). Our mindset determines our results. Our actions follow our attitudes and beliefs.

Change your attitude and change your results. Yesterday I wrote about “Gold Dust in the Air.” A salesman decreed that there was gold dust in the air and everywhere he turned he found prosperity. He found prosperity because he expected it, believes it and took the action to prospect for the gold.

Napoleon Hill wrote about your power to control your own mind and therefore, your results in “Think and Grow Rich.” The greatest tips for success all find their root in a positive mindset and massive action. When your beliefs are aligned with your actions, success building occurs. Beliefs align with thoughts, words and actions to produce success. Sound simple? Yes, it is. The beauty is that it is also very true.

Dogs don’t bark at parked cars because noting is moving or drawing their attention. Animals have instinct to avoid detection. Customers are searching for information; however, you must take the massive action to be where you can be easily found.

The tips for success remain very simple and specific. Set a target firmly in your mind, design a plan to reach the target and take massive action. Action creates the opportunity for customers to find you. Success training boils down to these few basic steps.

Another of the key tips for success is discipline. Each of these factors plays a significant role in your success. Consistency tops the cone of activities. Success requires daily focused action.

Build your cone of success by constructing a solid foundation of positive mindset for success. Add a layer of laser focused clarity of your target goal. Build another layer above that with a specific targeted audience. Above that add a layer of action plan, roadmap, as to the specific steps to achieve the goal. Second layer from the top resides taking the specific actions to achieve the goal. At the very top sits consistent daily action.

Think of the consistency as hot fudge on the top scoop of ice cream. Yes, it remains at the top but it also flows down through all of the layers of the success cone.

The key tips for success firmly reside in that cone of success. When you build it and immerse it throughout your being and your priorities. Success is guaranteed.

The GO Factor

Today’s Cup of Leadership is the GO Factor.

In order to go to the top of the leadership ladder, you must have help. No one gets to the top alone. There are always people helping anyone who gets to the top of the success ladder. There are those who climb to the top on the backs of other people. The most successful people are those who work with others and go to the top together.

The progression of a truly successful leader goes through the following sequence.

1. It is lonely at the top

2. Come up to the top and join me

3. Lets go to the top together

4. Its not lonely at the top

When a leader matures in this fashion there is more of a cooperation and service to others attitude. Only the insecure leader will make it to the top and push others down in order to stay up there alone. True leaders help others get to the top of the success ladder. Leadership which focuses on serving others and improving their lives will always gain more because they give more. Being a servant leader has been taught for hundreds of years, but it is all too frequently lost in the modern competitive society. The principle is still sound but it does not receive as much attention as it deserves.

Our modern corporate culture all too frequently promotes the idea that if someone gains then someone else loses. A culture which functions on the principle that together we accomplish so much more than any one of us does alone, will always be superior to a competitive culture. There can not be genuine caring and teamwork in a competitive culture.

In order to GO to the top and stay there with peace in your soul, work alongside others who have the same goal and mindset for service to others.

The GO Factor also functions on the fact that a leader must GET UP and take action in order to reach the top of the success ladder. No one gets there without effort. It takes positive thoughts followed by positive goal-oriented action to reach the top. Thoughts alone will not do it. Enthusiasm alone will not do it. Focused and consistent action is an absolute necessity.

The next element of the GO Factor is that a leader must GIVE UP to GO up. There are sacrifices to be made in the journey to the top of the success ladder. Regardless of whether you have a home based business or a job or a traditional brick and mortar business, there will be sacrifices. You can not take off to play every day and still achieve all of your business objectives. It is like losing weight. You can not eat chocolate cake and ice cream every meal and expect to lose weight. You make a choice. Achieving a goal does require choices and sacrifice.

The third element of the GO Factor states that you must GROW UP to GO UP. It requires maturity and personal growth. Jim Rohn says that in order to earn more, you must become more. Filling your mind with inspirational, educational information will assist you in GROWING UP. Increasing your value to society will assist your climb to the top of the success ladder.

To GO UP to the top of the success ladder, you must GET UP, GIVE UP and GROW UP.

Always Be Growing – Visualize

When Walt Disney passed away, someone commented to his widow that it was a shame that he did not see his dream of Disney World completed. His wife replied, “Oh yes he did. He saw it completed in every little detail in his mind before they ever broke ground.” That is being a visionary as well as visualizing your goal completed before it is actually reality to the rest of the world.

Every great leader in history has visualized his success far in advance of its appearance in the eyes of others. Great athletes see themselves crossing the finish line or seeing the ball sail over the goal post or into the net at the goal. A famous Olympic skier sees themselves crossing the finish line standing up to the cheers and cow bells of their enthused fans.

It is important to see the accomplishment in such detail that you hear the roar of the crowd, you touch the cool metal of the winner’s medal or trophy, and you feel the pride of victory. Engage your emotions in the entire process. Feel the feelings. Use all 5 senses to totally immerse yourself in the experience.

If you are in network marketing, see the email informing you that you have a new member of your team, Visualize your bank account with the deposits from your sales, Read the emails from happy team members who are learning and growing; feel the pride of leadership as you truly help others achieve their goals. See yourself on stage receiving awards. See your growing list of team members in your back office.

Now take it a step further and really see yourself enjoying the rewards of a successful business. What will it change in your life? How will your life improve? What will you be able to do for friends, family and team members now that you have achieved all of your goals and dreams? It is not about the money; it is about what that added income and accomplishment will do for you as a person and for everyone around you.

Jim Rohn, noted business philosopher, says “if you inherit or win a million dollars, the first thing to do is become a millionaire.” In other words learn how to think and act like a millionaire would act. It is not about earning the money; it is about the person you become in the process.

See yourself in your mind as not only accomplishing all of your goals but as the person you really choose to become in the process. What kind of legacy do you choose to leave behind you? It is all about visualizing yourself as the person you desire to become. That is the true goal. Seeing yourself accomplishing is only step one. The big step is seeing yourself as a leader and a quality person.

Are you ready to visualize yourself as a successful human being as well as a success in your chosen profession?

Time For Action, Not Excuses

Yesterday we talked about “no excuses.” Life happens to all of us. It is simply a fact. None of us have the perfect life where everything is always wonderful.

It isn’t what happens to us in our life that counts; it is how we respond to it. Life is 10 percent what happens to us and 90% our response to it. It isn’t even totally what happens to us but the way we interpret the events. Sometimes as we look back on a situation, what we thought and felt at the time was more the story we told ourselves than what actually happened. Food for thought – right?

Every time you go to a web page, you are seeking something. You were seeking something by coming to my blog right now. Have you found it yet? The good news is that as long as you are at least seeking, you have the potential of finding. When you give up seeking and give up on life, it gives up on you too. Keep reading and seeking and you will find. If you did a bit deeper into my blog, you may find exactly what you are searching for to enhance your life. If you want to talk to me personally, email me at ResultsForLife@gmail.com. I am here to help.

In this economy the help so many seem to be seeking is making more money. Money helps, absolutely, but it is more than money. It is about your life. Money is not the end-all-be-all; it is what that money brings to you and your life that really matters. Time freedom. Control of your future. Time to not only provide for yourself and your future but also for the future of those you care about. Time to truly enjoy your life.

What is holding you back from taking the next step to make your dreams come true? The question is not IF you want a better life, but HOW BADLY do you want to improve your life?

Nothing new and good happens by staying exactly where you are and have been. Improving your life requires stepping out of your comfort zone and stretching yourself.

Are you ready for success? Jim Rohn reminds us that “For things to change, WE must change.” For the circumstances in your life to get better, YOU must get better.

Successful people in any and all aspects of life take action. Successful people do not make excuses or blame others or throw up their hands and give up. They find another way to make it happen for themselves.

There is a quote I have on my desk which I love and I’ll paraphrase due to one word in the actual quote which may not be appropriate for all audiences. All things come to the one who waits, providing he prays and works very hard while he waits.

It is your future. It is your choice.

Life is a staircase

Life is a staircase

We are either stepping up or down.

Every thought, every word and every action either moves us up the stairs or down the staircase.

Sometimes when it seems like the forces of life are conspiring against you, it is difficult to hold a 100% positive attitude and yet that is exactly what we must do. Every entrepreneur experiences setbacks and challenges. That is absolutely a part of life.

The questions to ask ourselves during those “less than ideal” times are “How can I learn from this.” Or ask, “What good can come from this? Or even, “How can I resolve this situation for the good of all?” In almost all situations, the more solution-focused you phrase the question, the more positive solutions result.

When we focus on solutions, we create positive potential. If we focus on blame or any negative response, we in fact create more negative.

You will always receive more of whatever you give your time, energy and focus.

Be careful how you phrase your requests and thoughts. If you focus on “I need to lose weight” for instance you are really focusing on being overweight. If instead you focused on “I am in the process of becoming my ideal weight of _____ pounds,” then your focus is on becoming you ideal weight.

If you focus on “I need more leads,” then you are really focusing on the lack of leads. Rephrase that statement into, ”How can I generate more leads?” That is totally solution focused.

Success is never a straight line. It has its curves or angles both up and down. For most, if not all, successful entrepreneurs, it is an increase followed by a plateau. How much increase and how long the plateau will vary from person to person and business to business. The bottom line is that it is not about education, background, age, gender, or even the financial status. We have had people in each and every situation succeed.

It is all about the desire and the follow through. How much desire and determination and how much follow through will Absolutely Determine the height of the step up. How consistent you are and how dedicated you are to continuous learning and improving yourself will determine the length of the plateau.

Don’t misunderstand, every successful entrepreneur has challenges. Every one of us had had to readjust and work through a situation from a different angle from time to time. Every business will have periods of increase, plateaus and yes, step downs. The height and length of each one of those depends on you and how you are working your business.

Zig Zigler stated that success is not something you can pay for. You must purchase it on the installment plan and pay for it every day.

What is more important?

As I sit here tonight, it would be so easy to curl up in bed and not finish the details on my "get it done checklist" for today. Have you ever felt that way? Of course you have.

The difference between the highly successful entrepreneurs and the "just getting by" home business owners is such a slight edge. Those of us who truly are committed to success will stay up and finish that last detail before we call it a day.

Jim Rohn reminds us that it is easy to do but it is just as easy not to do. That slight edge of little success habits makes a huge difference in a week, a month and a year. It is truly the little things which make the difference between success beyond your wildest dreams and living a mediocre life. Will it destroy your business if you don’t accomplish anything one day? No. Will it make a big difference if you do accomplish your list one day? No.

The difference is your thoughts which translate into your words which flow into your actions. It all starts with your thoughts. What do you think is important? Is it more important to send that last email to a potential customer or is it more important to see the beginning of your favorite TV show? It’s those little things. Those slight edge decisions compounded over time which make the difference between the top and the bottom of the success ladder.

Look at your list of tasks for today. Well first, did you even make a list of the things you chose to accomplish today? If you didn’t even make a list then that is the first place to start. Make your list at night. Look at it first thing in the morning. Start to work on it immediately. Review it the last thing before you turn out your bedside lamp.

It is all about the little daily decisions. You are making choices to succeed or fail all day long. Be conscious of your choices. Are they serving you or destroying you? Since you are making the choices, if you don’t like the results, then make better choices.

You will be amazed at the improvement in your results.
